Where were you when it happened?

January 21, 2008 marks the history as the first African-American President sworn into office as the 44th President of the United States.

Obama Inauguration

The whole event proved to be momentous, heartwarming and spectacular. It’s not because of the celebrities who entertained the millions tuned in worldwide with their witty speeches, one-liners and performances. It’s not because of the big names in all fields, particularly that of US politics, who donned their most fashionable garb–some even in haute couture. It’s because of one man who just changed the course of history.

President Barack Obama’s inaugural speech was succinct yet teemed with strong, powerful words. I, for instance, would definitely concur that it’s not him, the figure head, that represents the country, but the citizens themselves. In retrospect, the speech is underscored in three words–WE ARE ONE.

I was glued on the boob tube when it happened. Honestly, it’s not much of my concern. Being the apolitical one, I can hardly talk about politics with pure indignation. I can opine much for few social issues here and there, but I don’t press issues to the point of refuting my side to others dissimilar of my own.

Philippine People Power Revolution - EDSA 1

On the other hand, today’s happening reminds me of the 1986 Philippine People Power Revolution. I may not have the capacity or consciousness for reasoning when the glorious movement transpired, but I think it gave quite a strong message: CHANGE.

It is really beyond deplorable that what we fought more than 20 years ago has been overlooked, or worse, forgotten. Corruption and nepotism have been the bane of our country for many years, hampering us from economic and political growth.

It pains me to see that the majority is still living under abject poverty. It vexes me to see those in authority abuse their power by means of subversion and malversation. It saddens me to see the growing rate of inflation, illiteracy and underemployment.

On the brighter side, I am still hopeful that we can see CHANGE, that we can curb paths from meandering astray.

Let’s start with ourselves. :)
